Personality:
Have you ever wondered what someone would be like if they were part of an idol-like hero group from a knockoff shrek fairy tale world? Yes, they would be just as awful as that sounds. This is exactly how Merlin introduces himself, the leader of heroic princes the people call upon when things turn dire. Referring to themselves as the "Fearless Seven," Merlin and his friends have taken on all sorts of things from evil witches to slaying hulking dragons. Despite being royalty, Merlin is definitely much more of an adventuring hero than a sheltered, castle-dwelling prince.

And he fucking knows it.

Being the go-to hero comes with a great deal of popularity, making Merlin the equivalent of a fairy tale celebrity. The man has fans, and why shouldn't he?? With good looks, charisma, and a proper princely demeanor, it only makes sense that he'd acquire so much admiration.

As one can imagine with any young man, this makes Merlin's ego absolutely abysmal. He knows he's hot shit, and being the leader of a bunch of guys who also think they're hot shit? Well he's even more loved than them, obviously. Merlin is so certain that he's Your Favorite™, that simply being told otherwise is a good way to momentarily break his brain. It legit just shut him the hell up.

The running theme of the story, however, is Merlin's unfortunate shallowness. That is, he puts a lot of stock into appearances, to the point where it causes him a great deal of trouble. Fairy tale logic dictates that obviously beautiful people could never be evil, whereas obviously only anyone evil, like a witch, could be evil. This is the bullshit that leads Merlin and his friends to get cursed, because after rescuing the Fairy Princess from a dragon, Merlin attacks her immediately.

“How were we supposed to know? She looked like a witch and everyone knows that a princess doesn’t look like a witch!”

Under the curse, Merlin and his friends turn into little green dwarves whenever anybody looks at them. This is, of course, a huge blow to his vanity and actually causes all of the boys to go into hiding. By the time the story starts, Merlin and his pals have actually been hiding and "missing" for about a year. One could easily write this off as just a bunch of pissbabies throwing the world's longest tantrum, but for Merlin at least, we come to find that his superficialness also applies to himself. All of Merlin's self-worth appears to be tied to his appearance, and just the thought that anyone would humor spending time with him in his dwarf form by choice simply doesn't compute.

We see this play throughout the movie as the boys try to help and charm Snow White's reluctant alter ego "Red Shoes." As the only way to break the curse is with a kiss—because of course it is—Merlin spends a lot of his effort trying to convince her it'll all be worth it in the end. She'll get to see his real self. It gets to the point where there's a level of self-loathing tied to it, Merlin isn't just being a brat, he actually considers himself worthless.

"When you open your eyes, there will be a handsome man in front of you, someone worthy of you, someone you'd be proud to be seen with."

As this is a movie all about loving yourself and others for who they are, it's only until Merlin has a very serious talk with...himself that he realizes Snow fell for him despite being unable to see his true form. That even though he finds out she's not the stereotypical looking princess, that perhaps that doesn't really matter. That maybe he's a giant idiot. Instead, Merlin discovers that he value's Snow's kindness and bravery over everything else, especially considering that this realization comes shortly after Snow risked her life by diving off an entire cliff to save him from drowning.

Because I am playing him after he has this epiphany, it should be noted that the way he values appearance isn't nearly as bad as it could be, but let's be real, he's not going to change overnight. Old habits die hard, it's not like he's going to pretend he ain't pretty and he still may call someone who antagonizes him ugly, but dammit he is getting there.

So then, why the hell would anyone fall for him anyway? As it turns out, Merlin has a very big heart when he isn't busy showboating. The hero act is genuine, it truly seems like he wants people to be safe and happy. Snow gets to see this firsthand after getting separated from her friends, eventually having to take off her "Red Shoes" disguise to lose some thugs, only to get harassed by some guards in an alley. When she eventually does spot the boys and calls out for them, they of course don't recognize her and wander off. When it appears as though they're ignoring her plight, it's only Merlin who goes back to make sure everything's okay because, hey, that was kind of weird actually. Merlin knocks out the guards in an instant, and although he doesn't recognize Snow White, he is nothing but kind and wishes her well before running off to keep looking for his supposedly missing friend. This pretty much sets into motion Snow's fondness for him, because every attempt to help afterwards is taken at face value, rather than just a means to an end.

Merlin is also a dork. When he finally becomes comfortable enough around someone, it turns out he's incredibly playful and delights in making people laugh. He'll make faces, he'll do voices, he'll generally make a fool of himself, he is honestly a giant child. This also goes towards his friends, Merlin does live with six other people, after all. They're important to him, and although yes they are young men who butt heads occasionally, they do in fact all live together. Well enough that the house isn't absolute chaos, and in fact, completely functional. It can be argued that the F7 is the closest thing Merlin has to a family, they very much like brothers. Sometimes a family is seven obnoxious princes, and that's okay.

When he isn't a dork, then he's a nerd. Being the same Merlin from the King Arthur mythos, he's still a wizard, and thus his room is filled with books and covered in charms. He's incredibly bright, despite everything, and notably quick on his feet even under the stress of battle. He's the leader for a reason, so long as we ignore that he got everyone cursed.
